UK Launch: Puérpera — Photobook by Deborah Elenter

Date: Friday 27 March 2026

Time: 5:00–6:30pm

Location: Women's Art Library, Special Collections, Goldsmiths, SE14 6NW

Description:

We are delighted to invite you to the UK launch of Puérpera, a striking photobook by Uruguayan visual artist, photographer and doula Deborah Elenter.

We were first introduced to Deborah's practice when she attended one of our summer schools, and have followed her work with great interest since. Since 2015, Elenter has been documenting and researching the experiences of people giving birth. Her work confronts the historical invisibility of childbirth in contemporary art, reclaiming it as a vital, political and collective experience. Published by the Centro de Fotografía de Montevideo in 2025, Puérpera has been launched at La Fábrica Bookstore in Madrid and at Kosice University in Slovakia. We are honoured to host the UK edition of this event.

As part of this launch, Deborah Elenter has generously donated an edition of Puérpera alongside a framed work to the Birth Rites Collection.

A conversation between Deborah Elenter and Helen Knowles, chaired by Althea Greenan, Curator of the Women's Art Library. Books will be available for signing.

Free — booking essential.

Can't make Friday 27th? Deborah will also be at The Photobook Cafe on Monday 30 March, 6–7.30pm for an informal book signing. Free — book via Eventbrite.
