The Birth Rites Collection held two symposia to explore the visual representations of childbirth. The symposia introduced the Birth Rites Collection and discussed the social, political and artistic implications of work around the subject of childbirth in contemporary art.

The symposium coincided with the Mary Kelly retrospective at The Whitworth. The day was rounded off with an evening reception at Salford University Midwifery Department to present the old and new acquisitions and films.

 The day was rounded off with an evening reception at Salford University Midwifery Department to present the old and new acquisitions and films.

One of two symposia we held to explore the visual representations of childbirth. We gathered artists, academics and curators to discuss the social, political and artistic implications of work around the subject of childbirth in contemporary art. The symposium coincided with the Mary Kelly retrospective at The Whitworth.

Starts and Ends of Life

Arts Health and Social care symposia taking place on the 19th November 2013 at Salford University.Key speakers and workshops included: Moses, Marie Brett, Helen Sargeant, Paula McCloskey, Dr. Rebecca Baillie, Sally Barker, Dave Garbutt, Jasmine Proust and Helen Knowles.

The symposia also launched new acquisitions to the Birth Rites Collection including works from Janet Russek, David Scheinbaum, Valerie Schmidt, Eti Wade, Tabitha Moses and Dominika Dzkowska.

Youtube Portraits Talk

Helen Knowles gave two talks about the Youtube Portraits Series. One was at Cambridge University for the CRASH seminars and the other at Talking Bodies in The University of Chester.

Private View : Public Birth - New artist-print intervention by Helen Knowles This exhibition is supported by the Women’s Art Library, located in the Library’s Special Collections at Goldsmiths, Arts Council England, The Amateurs Trust and The Eaton Fund for Artists and Gentlewomen.

This is the penultimate exhibition of the Youtube Portraits series. In September 2013, Helen Knowles exhibited the entire series in an exhibition entitled, Private View : Public Birth at GV Art Gallery in London.
