Workshop 1. Writing Text and Making an Image
Aim:
Exploring the Birth Rites Collection via the online tour and digital gallery space Reproduction and the State. Participants are asked to produce two creative responses to the collection’s artworks:
1. Write up to 250 words about an artwork in the collection — either one you are drawn to or one you dislike. Consider the following questions:
Why did you choose this work?
What emotional landscape does it evoke?
How does the materiality of the work inform your response?
What are the political or social implications of the piece?
2. Building on your written response, choose one of the following visual tasks:
a) Capture a photograph using your mobile phone of something from your everyday life that resonates with a work from the collection.
b) Draw the artwork and create an intervention in the drawing — add or remove something.
c) Construct a still life using objects from your surroundings that resonates with the artwork. Take a photograph of it.
Consider the medium, content, composition, materiality, and visual language of the original work in your response.
